7 Mistakes CLOs Should Avoid  |

Economic and technological changes require an organization to constantly keep up with new demands. Without staying informed and in the know, it can be easy for a Chief Learning Officer (CLO) to stray off course. At TCG CHEX eLearning we want to keep you informed . Here is a look at seven mistakes other CLOs have made and an opportunity to learn from them. For more details on “7 Risky Mistakes” check out this great article from Chief Learning Officer.

Mistake #1: Failing to transition from tactical to strategic thinking It is important to jump right into your new role as CLO and develop a new way of thinking in order to focus on relationship building, managing and resource allocation.

Mistake #2: Getting your program funding at the last minute As CLO, you must design a funding plan without relying on upper management. Waiting until the last minute can lead to wasted time and an unsuccessful program.

Mistake #3: Doing everything yourself Be sure to delegate tasks and duties. According to Chief Learning Officer, “Too often, leaders waste energy, recycle discussions and misalign in this area.”

Mistake #4: Being weak Be strong! The position of CLO requires strength and resilience. The CLO will act as a leader both politically and functionally.

Mistake #5: Being a bureaucrat Acting as a bureaucrat can lead to reduced learning and spirit. Be sure to avoid bureaucracy and focus on what is important.

Mistake #6: Embracing “Flavor-of-the-Year” programming A long-term program strategy is the best way to go. Be sure not to get distracted by fads and trends.

Mistake #7: Focusing on e-learning for executive development Executives act as leaders and therefore need the most effective training accessible. Try not to rely entirely on e-learning when it comes to executive education.

Every mistake is an opportunity for a lesson learned. TCG CHEX eLearning wants to help keep your organization educated and moving forward. Email us today at to see how we can assistyour organization.

Learning in the 21st Century Means Adapting to Change  |

Take a moment to read this article about the importance of adapting to change as it relates to learning. For many of us, change is difficult. We are resistant to it because we get comfortable with what we have or where we are. Think of how social media and new technology has changed our world just in the last decade. It is time to unlearn our old ways of doing things and move into the 21st century of new and improved practices when conducting business.

Implementing TCG CHEX eLearning is a perfect example of unlearning obsolete practices and putting new, updated and efficient practices in place. Gone are the tired efforts of pulling staff in for mandatory in-services and mandated updates to home health and hospice regulations when your staff has access to TCG CHEX and can keep updated from the comfort of their own home through the internet. Your tireless efforts of scheduling and re-scheduling in-services and meetings are ended when you implement our web-based eLearning management system.

Learning Is Still A People Business  |

An organization’s success with a new tool, technology, or approach depends on how this change is implemented. Change requires a shift in attitudes, behaviors, skills, and knowledge from management and staff. Long-term success is dependent upon how soon the change is adopted into not only work life but also organizational culture. The organization’s new tool, technology, or approach needs to be embraced by the organization as the “new normal.” Not all change is the same and different models must be used to make sure change initiatives are successful.

Lance Dublin, CEO and chief solution architect for Dublin Consulting, discusses these different models in the article Learning Is Still a People Business. He closes the article with seven valuable implementation tips for learning leaders. It’s worth taking a look!

Perception Of Learning Defined By Culture  |

What is the CFO culture in your organization? The conclusion of this article is that there are two separate camps for CFOs: there are those who believe learning is a good investment, and those who don’t. In the end, the real issue is that as a core competency, neither the learning profession nor the finance professions have what every pharmaceutical organization has: the knowledge and experience to separate the influence of learning from the financial impact.

Leadership Development: Into the Workplace  |

As noted in the article, Leadership Development: Into the Workplace from September 4, 2011, until now there has been little to no research into the effectiveness of online leadership and management development. A groundbreaking research study by Towards Maturity, the U.K.’s partner to Harvard Business Publishing, reveals that on-demand is the way that busy managers and executives like to learn. The study also shows that “the classroom” is not included among managers’ top three methods of learning delivery anymore and managers prefer solutions that are delivered on-demand – such as eLearning.

Although this article is not specific to the home care industry, I have traveled the country and talked to many home care and hospice leaders in the last five years. I have found by far that leaders prefer and understand the cost and time-savings eLearning affords them and their staff. Home care staff are mobile and eLearning, which allows education and training on demand when it is convenient for patient and personal schedules, is a better choice than bringing staff to the office for classroom training.

The Corridor Group Home Care & Hospice eLearning Exchange (TCG CHEX) offers many courses including a library for leadership and management development all on demand and at your fingertips!

What Is The Value Of E-Learning?  |

TCG CHEX eLearning continues to be the home care and hospice-specific leader in delivering web based education and training. As discussed in “What Is The Value Of E-Learning,” the question continues; what is the incremental value of delivering the learning online instead of face to face? With TCG CHEX, because the content in delivered and updated for the client, the cost of mandatory and orientation content development is not a specific cost but is a shared cost with a large and growing audience. Let us know if you agree with David Vance, the former president of Caterpillar University.  (Read his entire article here.)

eLearning Education = Better Outcomes!  |

How do you manage and collect data regarding your education program?  Do you have the ability to measure the results of what your learners are remembering and putting into practice with their patients?  Does the eLearning education you provide improve your patient care outcomes?

Running your eLearning education like a business requires that goals be set, data collected and programs managed throughout the year to deliver the planned results. Anything less is simply inadequate and will reinforce the notion that your program is not strategic and is not meeting your required ROI.

Outsource Training to Transfer Knowledge  |

“As companies begin to recover, the urgency of training is rebounding from its nadir during the difficult economic crisis. Enterprises leverage external providers to deliver more training than internal resources can provide while gaining access to better training expertise and controlling costs. The recovery of the use of outsourcing should have been predictable because benefits from and satisfaction with training outsourcing have remained remarkably consistent in the past several years.”

How Will Online Courses Weather the Economic Downturn?  |

“Paul Palley has noticed lively discussions these days in the economics courses he teaches at University of Phoenix. “We see a lot of focus on the recession, on layoffs, and on unemployment,” says Palley, an economist who teaches University of Phoenix classes both online and at the local Phoenix campus. But the awkward economic times have not dampened enrollment at a school best known for its online courses. “In the fourth quarter, enrollment at the University of Phoenix increased over 15 percent for the entire year,” says Palley. “That’s pretty substantial. They have over 360,000 students.”
