Economic and technological changes require an organization to constantly keep up with new demands. Without staying informed and in the know, it can be easy for a Chief Learning Officer (CLO) to stray off course. At TCG CHEX eLearning we want to keep you informed . Here is a look at seven mistakes other CLOs have made and an opportunity to learn from them. For more details on “7 Risky Mistakes” check out this great article from Chief Learning Officer.

Mistake #1: Failing to transition from tactical to strategic thinking It is important to jump right into your new role as CLO and develop a new way of thinking in order to focus on relationship building, managing and resource allocation.

Mistake #2: Getting your program funding at the last minute As CLO, you must design a funding plan without relying on upper management. Waiting until the last minute can lead to wasted time and an unsuccessful program.

Mistake #3: Doing everything yourself Be sure to delegate tasks and duties. According to Chief Learning Officer, “Too often, leaders waste energy, recycle discussions and misalign in this area.”

Mistake #4: Being weak Be strong! The position of CLO requires strength and resilience. The CLO will act as a leader both politically and functionally.

Mistake #5: Being a bureaucrat Acting as a bureaucrat can lead to reduced learning and spirit. Be sure to avoid bureaucracy and focus on what is important.

Mistake #6: Embracing “Flavor-of-the-Year” programming A long-term program strategy is the best way to go. Be sure not to get distracted by fads and trends.

Mistake #7: Focusing on e-learning for executive development Executives act as leaders and therefore need the most effective training accessible. Try not to rely entirely on e-learning when it comes to executive education.

Every mistake is an opportunity for a lesson learned. TCG CHEX eLearning wants to help keep your organization educated and moving forward. Email us today at to see how we can assistyour organization.

TCG is proud to be a sponsor of FHPCA’s Forum 2012 Together Hospice Works! Multiple Skills, Many Minds, One Mission! TCG and TCG CHEX eLearning have Sheryl Jones and Peggy Patton representing the team at the FHPCA Forum. Peggy is honored to be speaking at two of the conference break out sessions! Below are descriptions of the 2 sessions led by Peggy:

Best Practices in Implementing New Technology
Faculty: Peggy Patton, Manager of CHEX eLearning at The Corridor Group
Location: Orlando V
After spending many long hours sitting though countless software demonstrations a decision has finally been made. Your organization has made a huge investment in a new technology. Now what? Implementations are difficult and although the end result is usually favorable, tough times are ahead. Position yourself and your organization for a smooth transition and success by learning best practices to avoid the common pitfalls associated with many technology implementations.

Technology and Learning: Trends, Techniques & Tips
Faculty: Peggy Patton, Manager of CHEX eLearning, The Corridor Group
Location: Orlando VI
Core competencies are critical for your staff, but with the Hospice workforce spread out over your service area and needed at the bedside, managers and trainers must harness distance learning and electronic delivery options in order to ensure that all team members are trained efficiently and effectively. Whether you are updating pharmacy protocols or introducing a new sales campaign, you can train your staff wherever they are utilizing the latest trends and technologies. This session will explore the variety of tools available and show you how to get the most from your training dollars.

As a busy professional it is not always easy to dedicate full days to classroom work. TCG CHEX understands that professionals often wait until the last minute to complete orientation or ongoing educational requirements. With our flexible online system, staff can accomplish course work in bursts and get the required courses completed as their schedule allows. “Short, bite-sized bursts of learning offer an alternative for busy professionals,” says Mike Prokopeak. For more on how eLearning in small doses can benefit you, check out Prokopeak’s article “Short is Sweet in Learning!“
